So this issue has been keeping me busy for the past couple of days: when I turn my pc on from a cold boot it either

1) Resorts to iGPU instead of the GPU

2) Does not POST until I unplug it from the wall and hold the power button for a while, and then plug it back in and turn it on.

3) Fails to POST the first time, but reboots itself being succesful

4) Gets stuck at some other point e.g. stuck at the splash screen, not starting properly (I don't know exactly what it is, but I can hear by the sound of the fans it's not a "normal" boot).

Usually it's either 2 or 3. It also doesn't seem to like it when USB devices are plugged in during boot on the front panel. When it does boot however the system works fine.

My configuration currently is:

OS: Windows 10

CPU: i7 7700k

GPU: Nvidia 1080 Ti FE

RAM: Gskill Trident Z 16GB@ 3200MHz

Motherboard: Asus ROG Strix Z270F Gaming Pro

PSU: EVGA Supernova G2 1000W

The things I have tested so far already are with GPU in both PCIe slots, without GPU, one stick of RAM, two sticks of RAM and it does seem to start behaving weird when the GPU is in there, but it's not definitively tied to the GPU being in there. The issues are pretty much guaranteed when the GPU is in there though.

Components I have tested:

- GPU: I ran it in my previous setup (see signature) for about a month or so and never had any issues during gaming or benchmarks.

- RAM: ran Memtest86 overnight. Test passed, no problems found.

- CPU: seems to be fine as I experience no issues once the system boots (I could be wrong though?)

- Reinstalled Windows 10 twice (both clean installs; formatted drive etc).

All this leads me to believe that perhaps I've just had bad luck with my motherboard as I'm running out of ideas what could be wrong. It happens 99.99% of the time from a cold boot and rarely from a Windows-induced reboot. Does anyone have any ideas what it might be? Could it be bad PCIe slots? Or should I just save the hassle and RMA my board.

It's getting very frutstrating now that I can't figure out what's going on...

Thank you for taking the time to read all this.

TL;DR see points 1-4 above, is the board broken in some wat and should I RMA?

I don't know a super lot, but its probably a mobo issue (gee I'm helpful). You could sent in for a new one if you have a warranty, or just get a new one. Before doing that, try testing the hard drive and PSU. I wish you luck! Bloody asus.

I checked the SMART status of the drives and their fine. The PSU is also fine as far as I can tell, since my other system runs fine with it.

Maybe some settings in the bios?

try clearing CMOS and see if that will help somehow.

Clearing CMOS will make it boot (sometimes normal, sometimes with iGPU), but any subsequent boot will usually display the mentioned issues.

Alright, just sent in an RMA request. Let's hope it'll be solved after this.
