Do I NEED a 3.5mm to A/V cable with ground

Darts401

I was wondering if I needed a 3.5mm to A/V cable for my Raspberry Pi 3 Model B to display to my TV I am messing with the config and doing the instructions and nothing displays so I was wondering if it was my cable? If anyone can help I'd appreciate it.

Laptop specs:

CPU: Core i7 3630QM

GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT630M

RAM: 16gb of unknown origin

Storage: 1tb HDD (probably going to upgrade to an SSD at some point)

You shouldn't need to use a 3.5mm A/V cable if you are using HDMI. Here is a link to the raspberry pi forum I used to get my HDMI to transmit audio as well.

If your TV does not accept DMT/CEA and you want to use a A/V cable, then yes you must use a grounded 4-pole A/V breakout cable. I had a similar probelm back in the day with my iPod dock when I tried to hook it up to the TV. Ended up buying a grounded cable and everything worked perfectly.

Unfortunately I don't have an HDMI cable quite yet, but I should be getting one soon, I was just curious if I needed a grounded cable, I'll be sure to pick one up for backup when I get my HDMI cable. Thanks, I'll check out those forums
