I have a gigabyte motherboard with a built-in atheros ar8161 ethernet. The only way I can get my pc to sleep is by disabling it. I have tried numerous drivers. Searched for any kind of answer to the problem. Has anyone had any experience with issues like this in win 8.1.

I had the same problem, know what I do? I switch the computer off or put it to sleep.  What you could do is see if there is a new firmware updates for your computer, it could help, you never know

You can tell Windows to not set the device to go to sleep when you put the sleep. This will make it be powered up, while the rest of the system is in sleep state.

It's a workaround with not much downsides, as it's just LAN, which consumes nothing as energy, plus as you are not on a battery powered device, it's not a problem.
