I have a DS1515 curently has 3 WD red 6TB, running in a single volume configured as a Synology Hybrid RAID (with data protection of 1 disk fault tolerence). I am looking to upgrade the volume so I was looking at some 10 TB drives so my questions are :

1. According to Synology's website I have 9 compatible drives to choose from, the 2 that stand out for me are the seagate ST10000VN0004 - 1ZD101 and the WD GOLD WD101KRYZ - 01JPDB0, which one would be a better fit for my setup?

2. what would my RAID capacity be after adding this drive?

Thanks!

I believe SHR is just like a RAID5 (1 disk tolerance).

Theres generally 2 steps involved.

1. Increase the Physical drive space (e.g adding additional disks to the array or increasing the disk capacities)

2. Increase the Logical drive space (this is extending the partition.)

So with adding disks, you can either "Upgrade" existing disks, or you can add additional disks.

By removing and replacing the existing disks (e.g swapping out the 6TB drives for the 10TB drives one at a time) - with 3 disks you will have a total of 20TB (~18.7TB usable) space. Note: You must upgrade 1 disk at a time, and allow the parity to recalculate and the array to be in a healthy state before moving to the next disk.

If you add additional disks to the array, as your smallest disks are 6TB, you can only use 6TB of the new disks - until you upgrade them all to 10TB disks at which time you can extend the logical partition up to the full physical disk space. So adding 1 additional drive would take you from your current 12TB (~11TB) up to 18TB (~17.2TB).
