I have an 11.6"  MacBook Air 2011 running OS X Sierra 10.12.4 and it has battery issues, so I am planning on taking it into my local Apple store, biting the bullet and spending $150 to get it fixed. But before I do this, I want to make sure that I have all my data backed up properly. Meaning, in case it gets wiped or something, I would like to just restore from a backup, as you would when you get a new iPhone, but I am not aware of a way to do this, nor have I ever backed anything up on this MacBook, it is an SSD model, not HDD in case that makes a difference.

It is the 128gb model, and i only have a few 16gb flash drives and a 2tb WD Ultra HDD, that is broken and waiting on an RMA from WD to get it fixed...so i have no way to do this then? could i just have apple back it up before they work on it, that way any data that is lost is on them?

Buy an HDD, get your max fixed. Make sure your data is there/restore it if it isn't. Return the hdd.

Or just take the SSD out, it's not soldered.

i think you want to invest in a USB drive in the future anyway. My local store sells discounted 500GB 2.5" OEM drives they pull out of new laptops when the customer wants an upgrade; then its only a few dollars for an external USB case. These are what I use as backup drives coz I can afford a number of them.

Should i even be worried about losing/corrupting the data on my MacBook, all that I am doing is replacing the battery....

I mean i can undestand if i am going to remove the battery while it powered on, but im not going to do that, im not an idiot, so i am curious how i will lose/corrupt data then?

Because Apple will sometimes reformat the system to ensure that there are no other software-related issues.
