Hey,

I was wondering if it is possible to use something like a Ubiquity Sectoral WiFi Antenna to create your own sort-of cell network.

For example, I have an office in Tulsa, and we just so happen to have a giant 60 ft tower with an old radio antenna at the top in our back yard.

Because my house and friends and my kid's school is nearby, why not mount a few of these antennas on the top of this pole, connect it to a 1000 Mbps fiber line, and be able to connect directly to this network within a few mile radius, provided you have a clean line of sight?

Maybe I am making this simple, or maybe I am about to become the coolest dad ever.

It's doable for sure, but you might not want to use the sectoral one. Compare them all to find the best model for you.

My native language is C++

So to get this correct, you could mount a few WiFi antennas and actually connect to the network via your phone over a mile away?

I am thinking about using something like this: https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/airprism-sector/

I have a massive budget, so I am open to suggestions. Would like a a few mile radius at about 60ft

Good luck with upload speeds, they will drop to the ground when more than 100m away.

We'll just see about that ;)

Owning the AC LR myself, I can certify this.

Also i think what you are looking at is airmax, a point to point only bridge for a network. basically a wireless ethernet cable.

So a Sectoral Antenna will not allow you to connect directly? Thought that was kind of the whole point?

Here is what I am planning to do in terms of setup.

We have a 60FT high-quality pole with heated/cooled and protected core for wire running.

Mount 4 of these on the top https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/airprism-sector/

Use 12 of these https://www.ubnt.com/airmax/rocket5ac-prism/

And one Tier 1 Connection.

Add some routers, poe, and converters.

What do you think?

Hehehe, but will this give me good coverage within a couple of miles and can you connect to the network directly?

I don't think Airmax works like that.

I thought it was

Network -> Dish -> distance -> Dish -> client/network

Right, Ubiquiti has stuff like that, for direct bridging, although it would be odd to use a sectoral antenna as a bridge (think about a cell phone tower)

So for a highly focused dish it would be Tier 1 > Network > Converters > Dish > thin air > Dish > Subnet router

But what I am thinking is for these 30x30x30 (x4) Prisma, it would be Tier 1 > Network > Converters > 12 Antennas > Client

I believe if you stood between the two dish you could connect to the bridged network with your wireless client, but the dish is built for long distance (30km+) bridging, whereas the sectoral antennas (like what they use on cell phone towers) are built for shorter-range widespread broadcasting.

I am probably wrong, but if not this will be the coolest thing ever.

Probably better off trying to get an unlimited data sim contract.

sounds cool, try is out, but I think you got the 2 mixed up, you need 12 sectors antenna and 4 prism radio boxes.
