So i recently made a post about overclocking my 6402p, and i want more :P After getting it to 3.4 with lots of help, i plan to push it further, but my mobo wont let me, so i think im going to upgrade. If i am correct, any random z170 1151 socket should allow me to overclock using the baseclock method, right? Im also planning on crossfiring my 480s once i get another one, but ive searched the internet looking for optimal pcie lanes but i couldnt find any. So i guess my questions are: would i be able top pick up any old z170 mb and be able to base clock my i5 6402p, and what are the minimum lanes needed for crossfire?

to answer your first question yes any z170 base motherboard will allow you to change the base clock only but not the multiplier. To answer  your next question you need a minimum of 16 pcie lanes for crossfire to work. With your current cpu that will be fine, so go ahead and grab another RX480

But do you really want to go through all the trouble?

First you need an AsRock board. Not sure if any AsRock works

Then you need to downgrade BIOS because most mobo shipped with new BIOS has disabled BLCK

And the increase in performance is marginal too. You would better off saving money with an i7

Yeah but im getting a new mobo for a 480 anyways. Im wondering if it would be worth it to pay extra for overclocking my cpu even higher

No not really, you may one to two fps higher in game but that is about it. The only way that will change is if you get a better cpu

some boards to have chips built in to allow them to base over clock.

its not perfect and many games dont, but most tripple a games have at least 60% scaling

if you can get a 100-150$ you can get a 1070 a much faster card, crossfire will make them about equal but not all games work and not all games scale well http://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-1070-vs-AMD-RX-480/3609vs3634

how selling you rx480 should get you 100 and the new card is 200 that puts you at a 1070.

This is canada, where the cheapest 1070 i could find is 550, 400(480s go 150 used, 250 new) so its a big price difference
