Hello

Here is my question,

I currently have (2) Corsair Neutron GTX 120gb SSD's they will be in a RAID 0 configuration, I also have (2) OCZ Vertex 2 120gb SSD's. Should I?

Install the OS and all Apps on the corsair raid?

or

Install OS only on Corsair raid and Apps on the OCZ raid keeping the information separate?

Note: Keep in mind that I will be buying more Corsair drives to boost raid 0 performance in the near future.

Thank you for any and all input

Why raid 0? Also, 120GB should be plenty for your programs and os as is. Why would you want to separate them when you have a 240GB ssd raid array as is?

The more SSD storage over which you write, the less wear. Less wear means longer life. Presuming you keep good backups, raid the lot into one array.

I've never tried it with SSD and the on-board RAID, Intel's at least, is not the fastest doing this, but you might consider RAID 5. You would end up with 360GB of storage capacity with the very real advantage of having protection from a single unit failure.

As to performance, RAID 0 with SSD only shows real world differences for reasonably high volumes of sequential reads/writes.

Running RAID 0 for performance increase. The only reason I would separate OS and Apps is if there would be a performance gain from separating them. Before SSD's it was a good idea to separate the data for performance, now with SSd's is this still the case?

Thanks brob, for the input, is there any difference performance wise between RAID 5 and 0? Data protection doesn't really bother me since I back up the raid array via Macrium Reflect drive imaging to an external Raid 5 NAS (Which I need a new one, it's kinda slow but that's another topic)

Other than failure protection there is no advantage of RAID 5 over 0 and as I alluded to, RAID 5 has a small write overhead as parity blocks are also calculated and written.

That's probably still the case but the difference in performance is quite insignificant and not worth it.
