The highest temperature cpu can run

modern CPU's will throttle their speed, but if that is not enough to cool it down, it will just shut down before it reaches unsafe temperatures that would cause damage.

 

I believe Intel CPU's shut themselves off at about 110 degrees C. Under usual circumstances, the CPU should not reach that temperature though, unless the cooler is broken, or perhaps in a laptop under a stresstest.

 

So it can't really die, because it would shut itself off before that happens.

 

Too much voltage when overclocking can kill the CPU though...
