Is the AM4 socket different from the earlier revisions from AMD?

The mounting holes are different to previous, so coolers which need to screw into a backplate are not compatible. However, the motherboards still come with the plastic clip mounting, which allows coolers which mount onto the 2 plastic clips to still be compatible.

This is why the older Corsair coolers which used the clip mounting are compatible with AM4, but the newer coolers which screw into the backplate are not.

Some of the AM4 motherboards have also included AM3 mounting holes in addition to the AM4 holes to increase backwards compatibility, although not many have this.
