Make sure your friend has a 1440p 144Hz/165Hz or 4K monitor if he goes with a GTX 1080 ti. And as mentioned wait for the aftermarket versions.

A GTX 1070 would be fine for 1080p. No price on the gpu so you would have to see if you can source one.

The extra cores make it more future proof (Hate that word xD). If he does extra things like game streaming or video editing/rendering etc then the 8 cores will help.

 

I would stick with a GTX 1070 though if he only has a 1080p monitor as it will still have enough power for 1440p if he wants to move to that resolution.
