Ok so I have had my current computer since, 2008ish, it is just a computer that I bought, it has had no hardware improvements, and is now dying :-(

So I want to make my own PC, I want to make one that will be good for gaming and not terrible at video editing but this will not be its main function

I have been doing my research (a lot of linustechtip youtube videos) and have set my budget to £1000-$1600 although will be quite happy if I can make this build under budget and this does not include peripherals

So far this is my build list, but am willing to change it depending on feedback.

  • Case - Bitfenix Prodigy -  I haven't decided on colour, but do want vent holes on the side for GPU airflow I would quite like a small case so it doesn't take up room and can be transported easily

  • Case fans - Bitfenix  Spectre Pro 1 230mm 1 140mm - just for improved cooling and bigger fans are quiter

  • MOBO - Gigabyte GA-Z87N-WIFI - Obviously has wifi and bluetooth, but think I will have to go water cooling as there apparently isn't much space between CPU and PCI slot, unless anyone knows of heat sink that will fit?

  • Processor - Intel Core i5 4670k - I don't know if I will or should OC but I think it comes with a boost?

  • RAM - Corsair 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3 1600MHz Vengeance Pro Kit -Blue - Honestly I chose this RAM as it looked cool, apparently works well with Haswell and had a good rating on ebuyer

  • Power Supply - Corsair 600W CX - I believe its a good PS and will work?

  • Graphics Card - EVGA GeForce GTX 770 SC - It looks to me to be a good card at good price comes with some games and has 2 GPU fans built in, But am open to other suggestions?

  • SSD - I have no idea which to get and don't know if i should just have my OS (Win 8.1) on here or other programs?

  • HDD - Don't know if i should get one of these as well as a small SSD or just get few good size SSD to put games and music on then keep Photos on an external hard drive?

If anyone could look through this and let me know what they think, i would appreciate it thankyou :-)

Also i am planning on building this in Jan14 so that i have Christmas and Birthday money to put into it, I don't know if there are any parts coming out between now and then that i don't know about that might be a better option

No need for watercooling. the Prodigy can accommodate most large heatsinks. That being said, the Prodigy is pretty darn big for an itx case. Are you tied to that case or are you open to others?

Do you just want a small system?

You should get a hdd. The ssd shoudl really only be for your programs and os unless you really are a light on storage.

Caviar blues are for standard use. Greens are slower, cooler, use less power, and are quieter. They are designed mainly for storage and less so general use but they work fine for it.

I am quite tied to the Prodigy, I think it looks really good, and yes i know that it can store large heatsinks but dont know if they will get in the way of the PCI port on the MOBO that i have selected?

Why not AMD?

I simply know much more about intel and nnvida than i do about AMD

Just so you know you do realize the Prodigy is far from small for an mitx build, right? It's about twice the size of some other ones.

There's nothing much to know about AMD that's drastically different from Nvidia. Unless you need a specific application that is Intel or Nvidia specific, AMD will do the job just the same.

Yeah i know but even looking at them there in the pic i think the prodigy would be easier to carry and provides more flexibility in regards to space, also i would quite like to you Shadowplay

Alright--just wanted to make things clear.

Even though they're not in the budget, did you need any peripherals?

How about something like this(intel cpu, amd gpu):

http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/22kKh

I know you said no AMD, but just think about it. 8320/50 AMD are very good cpu's

You can even go with this GPU: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/sapphire-video-card-112210140g

Or if you wanna stick with nvidia: http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/part/asus-video-card-gtx770dc2oc2gd5

Alright. How's this look? http://uk.pcpartpicker.com/p/22nu8

I just noticed you were building in January. Plan later. 2-3 days at most before you buy. Parts and prices change frequently.

It looks good however i have looked into it and asked some owners and there is no way that that heatsink will work with the MOBO as it will block the PCI port so will prob have to go Liquid cooling as they dont take up the same amount of space

and yeah, do you think there could be a chance of a christmas/new year sale?

Hi there thank you this build looks really good to me i think i will go with the nvidia card, that way i can use shadow play. and upload to youtube without putting much of a dent in framerate :-)

Hmm, I never heard that before. I guess you can always get an H60 with an aftermarket fan.

You could also, just turn the 212 Evo 90 degrees. Airflow wouldn't be perfect but it would cool just fine.

There are ALWAYS sales.

......Is it possible to make an entire computer for no where near the actual price?

You mean retail price?

Ok so question i've looked at the specs of the MOBO more closely on their websire and it say the following

  1. 2 x 1.5V DDR3 DIMM sockets supporting up to 16 GB of system memory

    * Due to a Windows 32-bit operating system limitation, when more than 4 GB of physical memory is installed, the actual memory size displayed will be less than the size of the physical memory installed.

  2. Dual channel memory architecture
  3. Support for DDR3 1600/1333 MHz memory modules
  4. Support for non-ECC memory modules
  5. Support for Extreme Memory Profile (XMP) memory modules

(Please refer "Memory Support List" for more information.)

does that mean i cannot instal a 64 bit OS on here? and is there any point in having more than 4GB of RAM if i can't?

No. It's just a disclaimer for those who don't know that 32 bit Windows can't support more than 4GB ram.
