Why does Intel have pins in the socket while AMD has them on the CPU?

Is there an advantage to either or is it really just personal preference that each of these sides seem to have gone with? It's honestly something that predates my interest in computers.

On one hand CPU is often more expensive than a motherboard to replace unless you're at a lower CPU price point, but on the other hand the motherboard is sort of the platform from which all other modules communicate which means something going wrong with the motherboard means you gotta unplug literally everything to switch it out. Another thing it you gotta be more careful transporting a lone CPU than a lone motherboard because it's easier to bend the pins carying a CPU around than on the bigger motherboard where the pins are sort of sheltered in the socket.

Not sure which I prefer. Is there more technical differences too?

what if I told you AMD makes LGA type CPUs as well and Intel makes PGA CPUs as well? There are pros and cons to both of them. AMD uses LGA on server CPUs because there are more pads to carry a signal and Intel uses PGA in laptops because it's harder to damage (to my knowledge).

Just different means to the same end... Both work just fine. PGA chips are nice since they provide a nice, large surface area connection to the motherboard ZIF socket... but LGA is just fine too.

I like PGA chips... a lot easier to fix a bent pin on those than on a LGA socket :)

AMD has pins so that the mayonnaise fits in easier
