Hey everyone,

I've had a problem with Nvidia drivers for the past few months now. This problem makes gaming nearly impossible and just everything on my computer a misery.

The problem first occured I think a week after I upgraded my motherboard.

I can undoubtedly say this is a driver problem as if i disable my 970 display driver everything goes back to normal

I have an ASUS Z170 Pro Gaming and a gtx 970

What the problem is - So, firstly whenever a new frame seems to appear (In about everything not just games) These small black squares will flicker on and off the screen, sometimes they completely go away and everything is okay for a few seconds, they then return. It makes almost everything hard to do. For example If I'm watching a video it occasionally causes a short blackscreen and when it is resumed my video has failed and I have to refresh the page.

When I try to play most games the black squares either persist flickering in the game or just downright crash the game.

I've tried A LOT of fixes for example clean uninstalling all my drivers with use of DDU (Every time I try and install a new driver the problem just returns)

Attempting to change settings in the bios

Using different power cables & vga cables

I just can't seem to fix this at all :( Please help. Thanks.

just out of curiosity. And im talking from a past experience. When was the last time you cleaned your fan on your GPU. Is you GPU been cleaned. Overheating problems can cause GPU to do strange things on screen when playing games etc. My first gpu died and had similar problems from yours becuase i didnt clean it.The fans got blocked up and the card overheated and died eventually. This was a very long time ago when i first starting building pcs lol

Onboard graphics

Well if you use onboard graphics that means you have your cables plugged into the motherboard, correct? That doesn't mean it's proof of a driver issue because onboard GPU and a dedicated GPU are completely different things.

It is most likely a faulty GPU then. Have you tried using different cables?

Problem is if he had a faulty GPU 9 times out of 10, he would get some sort of bluescreen saying his gpu has a hardware error. Hes not getting anything.

Check them cables make sure the motherboard is installed correct and the GPU. Since you said it first started when you installed a new motherboard. Also make sure your motherboard bios firmware is up to date just incease that might be a problem your your GPU "unlikely but can happen"

I've replaced the cables before, that wasn't the issue, the thing is I'm literally playing ds3 now no problem no black squares or anything but as soon as I close it I can guarantee

that the problems will start again

Well I've yet to deal with a dead card (I'm still on my first PC) so I'm not 100% sure what could diagnose as a "dead GPU". Bit sinxe it it doesn't happen with iGPU graphics then I though that could be the only explanation, apart from the cables.

But you're right, it's strange it happened when he installed an new Motherbaord. Although it's  unlikely, he could have damaged his GPU when transferring his components to his new motherboard.

I would also reccomend trying a different PCIE slot if you haven't already or maybe another GPU if you have one lying around.

I have tried a different PCIE slot and I do have a gtx 660 hanging around I might try that later

Yeah, change the card, if it still persists it is most likely another component causing the issue.

You could also try another monitor if you have one.

Yea it might actually be his motherboard and not his GPU. Put that 660 in and play some games for a while. Make sure you unistall your 970 drivers fully and do a clean install of the 660 drivers. If it still happens chances are its not the GPU it might be the motherboard in that case check for a firmware update. If it dont happen its probarly your 970.

Actually It is probably worth noting that these problems happened on my previous motherboard for a short period of time and then just stopped

ok in that case its looks like its your GPU. It could be dieing a slow death. it could be overheating. Have you ever open up your 970 and changed the thermal paste in the card?

If not it might be worth changing the thermal paste but only if your happy to do that. However if your card has warranty still this will void it. But dont do that just yet. Have to make sure its not another problem first.

Thats a good thing. RMA it and explain the problem. It sounds like the card is has some sort of hardware problem. They will take it away and if there is a problem will either fix it for you or replace it. And if there aint a problem they will return it to you. And that case you will no its NOT the GPU.

I'll try that for now :) Thank you all for your help!
