Hello, everyone.

I've had my first computer for a good month now, it's rocking an Intel Core i5 4460 at 3.2 Ghz. my first month using it was very good. much faster than my older Celeron based laptop that i've used for about 3 semesters, and paired with an RX 470 and 16GB of RAM ( i got a good deal on it, so why not), gaming isn't much of an issue. Now, why did i choose a Haswell i5 rather than Skylake or Kabylake, is because my initial option is to go with the i3 6100, but saw that a new 4460 was on discount and making it cheaper than the i3 so i figure why not. My question is, how long do you guys think that this chip is gonna be relevant? I know that some user still uses their Sandy Bridge chips, or even their Core 2 Quads. but i wonder if my 4460 can last me 7 years... what do you all think?

it's gonna be relevant until your requirements go beyond the capabilities of your processor.

if you're one of those people who love older games, chances are great that it's gonna be relevant for MUCH longer than for example if you're an "all the new AAA titles every year" person.

or as in an example: the shop i work for still sells core2quads, why, you may ask? well.. for people who need a pc for nothing more than microsoft word, some browsing, and the occasional grandchild visiting to play space cadet pinball, and usually dont have much more than €170 to spend on a computer.. well it's kind of one hell of a deal isnt it?

We cant answer how long itll last. For all we know next year games will require hexa cores.

Most I can say is if all goes down hill, in 3-4 years a 4790k will be dirt cheap.

for all we know next year there'll be a pcie card for INSANE used-to-be-cpu numbercrunching, ending cpu bottlenecks for gaming.

I'm not the type of power user, i've built my system initially to meet the minimum req. of Forza Horizon 3 (a game i've been dying to play since it's now on PC and i haven't played any of the Horizon series [never owned XBOX]). i much prefer playing older titles or racing games (less taxing) and occasionally light video editing

as long as you keep to your same old racing games, and dont want your video editing to become faster, theoretically the system will never be outdated ;)
