Hello Everyone. I am a long time reader / watcher, first time poster.

I have been a computer hobbyist for close to 25 years, but recently my key interest has become amateur / home network and server infrastructure. After waiting for benchmarks and collecting cash, I recently decided that it was time to upgrade my aging Media / File Server. Here is how it is going down.

My current server:

  • CPU - AMD FX-8320 @ 4 GHz
  • Memory - 32 GB Corsair Vengeance Pro 2133 MHz
  • SSD: Samsung 840 Pro 128 GB
  • HDD: 4x HGST DeskStar NAS 4TB in RAID 10

Ill spare you the other specs, as they are irrelevant at this point.

My new server:

  • CPU - AMD Ryzen 7 1800x
  • Memory - 32 GB Corsair Dominator Platinum 2666 MHz
  • Mobo - Asus Prime x370-Pro
  • GPU: AMD FirePro W2100
  • SSD: Corsair Force MP 500 480 GB
  • HDD: 6x HGST DeskStar NAS 6TB in RAID 0 + 4x HGST DeskStar NAS 4TB in RAID 10
  • Case: Corsair Graphite 780T
  • CPU Cooler: Corsair Hydro H100i v2
  • PSU: Corsair AX860i

Here are most of the parts.

Most of the pictures I took during the build came out terrible, but here is an OK one of the system fully assembled.

I had to use zip ties to hold down the CPU block, as I am still waiting for Corsair's AM4 mounting bracket to arrive at my house.

Lastly, here it is in my mildly messy server closet.

I completely agree, but I have plans for this closet that are forcing me to wait on a re-cable. That LCD panel sitting directly below my ONT (right hand middle) is a controller for an exhaust vent that I need to properly install. I am also going to take the opportunity to sand, paint, and install a louvered door. After all that is done I will manage the hell out of those cables.

Niiice should be quite the closet when it's done! Does it get quite hot?
