So i am planning on building a computer (for the first time) and i was wondering what CPU should i get i am planing on getting a high end graphics card probably like a gtx 1080ti or whatever AMD offers in the future and i am gonna be playing in 4K   I do not give a shit about 1080p performance because I am fine with like 40 fps lol i do not need higher than 60 fps just want a cheapest CPU possible so i can get a high end GPU, and I know some some CPUs offer more performance in general due to more cores and threads

I was gonna go for something like a i5 7600k but with r5 cpus  on the way that offer threads and more cores and a cooler I am also hearing that games are now benefiting with more thread and cores eg battlefield 1. watch dogs 2 so i have that in mind

what cpu do you recommend ?

ps: i really need to save as much money for the GPU as possible and I know the r5 1600x does not have a cooler also i do not overclock

depends  7700k, ryzen 1700 or 5820k/6800k.

Do you think the 7700 would work too? If it does, he would save a little money, and it would have a stock cooler. He also isn't going to overclock

Edit: It may be a wise decision to wait for Ryzen 5

overclocking takes small amount of effort but in 1440p not that big of a deal, if OP goes for 6 or 8 core cpu, i would highly suggest it.

I would also suggest it, but I understand being scared about overclocking

Yeah 7700k or Ryzen 1700. I would go more cores just because DX12 and Vulcan are where developers are headed, and both take advantage of that.

1700 isnt as good for current gaming

Hes talking about future though, I agree buy the best option at the time you buy, but at the same time if he plans on doing this for the future, coffee lake is coming out (Supposedly 15% faster then Kabylake, but we have been down that road before) With developers going into Ryzen and with more cores being viable (Already seeing this in newer titles) With dx12 and vulcan I think hes better off either getting a 1700 and overclocking it, or waiting for Coffee lake.

This is so true. I got my 480 swore I would never overclock it and spent hours pushing it to its limits lol

snip

real question is how long are you going to keep this build...?

2 years? go 7700k or 6600k whichever fits you best.

4+ years? go with 1600x or 1700
