Dual Channel Compatibility

I first built my system about a year ago thinking that 8 gigs of ram would be plenty for me. I'm now noticing that this isn't enough and I'm looking to upgrade to 16gb. I've been asking around and can't get a straight answer as to whether or not buying another stick would work with the one I have. The exact stick is still in my amazon order history so I can buy the same one again, I'd just like to know if it's an acceptable alternative to getting a 16gb kit.
