Thermalthrottling?

Was playing rise of the tomb raider for an hour, suddenly everything became a slide show, fps around 20-30. My guess is that something is thermal throttling but I'm not sure what. Had realtempGT turned on in the background, gave me a max reading of 61 celsius core temp. Any ideas on what to do? or is this actually normal? CPU overclocked to 4.6ghz

Install some in-game monitoring software like MSI afterburner and see GPU temps while playing. For the other thing " windows doing something in background ",you can check this only by alt-tabbing while gaming and checking task manager OR just by playing games (if it doesn't happen again then windows was causing the problem).

Hmm temps seem to be fine. It's really strange. Have you checked task manager when it's happening? Some strange processes? Do you run Chrome or something else in the background?
