High Asus Router ping

My ASUS RTN12 router is randomly slows down. When you first connect a new device, it works great for one week. However, after this one week honeymoon period, it goes crippling slow. Ping goes from 16 to 1350, Download speeds go from 16 to 500kbps and uploads go to 2kbps This is without any devices except one and without any windows updates over Wired and Wireless connections (I tried both) . I've tried resetting to no avail as well. However, when i plug my laptop directly into the modem it works fine. This has been happening for about a month. Any insight helps

Sounds like an ISP problem if it has the same problem on wired and wireless, but to confirm it can you try using wired and wireless with another router?

check for FW updates

N12 is a seriously old router, should consider upgrading - my original N12 died few years back, replaced with N18U

If not firmware exists you can try DDWRT, according to their router database its supported. This is of course if you want to save some money. But upgrading is not a bad idea. I just know it might fix your routers issue. I had issues with my router dropping the 2.4 Ghz radio. DDWRT fixed the issue. So essentially saved me money.
