FIRST REBUILD SINCE i5-2500k: help me not waste money

Here's what I want to do, help me fix anything.

IT LOOKS LIKE A LOT BUT ALL I REALLY NEED TO KNOW IS IF THE BUILD I'VE PLANNED IS GOOD, CAN IMPROVE, AND IS WORTH IT OVER WHAT I CAN SLAP TOGETHER (sorry caps)

Goal: run 4K at 100fps for 100hz pg348q 34" asus monitor in for honor and others on ultra.

build:

•reuse level 10gt white full size case

•asus Maximus code z270 mobo OR OTHER! (see questions/concerns)

• i7-7700k (open to others!)

• SLI dual 1080 goal, single 1080 FTW for now (see questions/concerns)

• ddr4 16gb 3600 ram

• multiple hard drives, see below (questions/concerns)

• corsair h80 CPU cooler

• corsair 850watt gold psu (6/7 years

old but still kicking it!)

• hopes and dreams

QUESTIONS AND CONCERNS:

•  I've got an older (700s?) Samsung SSD, a very old, less than 100gb SSD with windows 10, and a 1tb hybrid for now. M.2 soon. Is this a total waste with the new Intel mobo tech for RAM And data swap-page? Should I dive into m.2 right away?

• Currently can take the FTW acx3.0 I got in January out of razer core as I'm going desktop. Can buy other brand and still SLI. Just can't go 1080gtx and 1080ti, has to be SLI 1080 gtx for now.... unless I buy a ti and wait to SLI with another.... only founders edition is available now too I think?

• re ASUS MAX CODE: is formula worth it if not running open loop? Should I run open loop?). I wish there was a high end WHITE mother board.....

• case tech: my tower is old, but will be cleaned up well (it's always been pretty clean, so no issues), it had great airflow for it's time, wondering if new case tech (like all these corsair box setups, or cool looking clear case by TT) is worth the spend?

• budget constraints: I've got 810-1000 in store credit to microcenter, depending on what I return.... so..... I can PRETTY MUCH only afford 1400 right now MAX, and would love to keep it at 1000. That means I can only get CPU, RAM, mobo and have them do the swap cause I'm lazy and don't want to be responsible for fucking it up, it's been so long...

• is this even worth it? I could just go buy another 1080ftw and run it on what I have with a CPU bottleneck I'm sure. Would it be worth it to go all out yet? See current rigs

• would I be better off running the desktop with the 1080gtx and repurposing the laptop for what it should be used for (work)?

• DO NOT AMD RYZEN ME, I WONT HAVE IT! Lol

current rig(s):

•i5-2500k oc'd comfortably at 5ghz, can go quite a bit higher I bet....

• 780gtx EVGA SC or 1080 GTX FTW acx3.0 (it's in a razer core, which I'm giving up on that as a desktop replacement)

• 256gb Samsung evo older gen ssd

• weird and random LESS THAN 128gb SSD for windows 10 pro only

• 32gb (I think, it's been awhile) corsair vengeance ddr3

• asus z77 sabertooth mobo (I loved this thing!)

• corsair h80 single fan CPU closed loop "water cooler"

• corsair (I think?) 850watt gold power supply

• level 10GT snow edition full size TOWA POWA

• ASUS ROG STRIX 34" pg348q ultrawide 100hz OC curved beast-of-a-monitor running a GOOD 3ft display port cable or HDMI (booooo)

WHAT I'VE BEEN USING

razer blade 14" late 2016, 1060 gtx, i7-6700hq, 16gb ram, QHD touch display, coolermaster cooling mat, razer core with 1080 GTX FTW on t3, above monitor,

Periphs if curious:

all the mech keyboards (I have to pick a favorite, the ASUS claymore I tried was a lemon, replaced with a lemon: x40 das, k95 platinum, k70 speed switches, 68key fun boards, CM rapid fire TK, etc) and an ASUS SPATHA wireless mouse with razer mamba wireless as backup (just fun to share periphs)

I think you chose well. But if I were you, I'd get the second GTX 1080 first and slap that into your old rig. Maybe your 2500k isn't ready for retirement yet...?

Eventually the H80 will have to be replaced with something better.

You're awesome, thank you for this! I did know about the SLI stuffs, as long as the GPU is the same (like, the actual GPU inside the card) it SHOULD work in theory, of course there's a lot more to it, i would NOT Have known that had i not stayed up till god knows when last night researching it. I don't even know why i'm saying this because that is super helpful information and an awesome link to share.

-I DID post up the card and the razer core on craigslist last night, i'm glad you suggested this, because i really didn't know what the best way to go is/was. My gut was telling me to get a brand new 1080Ti and SLI another one later on. I read somewhere that 1080s in sli was only like 15% faster than a 1080Ti. (this was probably all using reference cards, so, not necessarily accurate to aftermarket OC'd cards)

If that figure is correct though, that would mean it's almost stupid to spend a little less than a Ti on an SLI setup when i could just spend a little more and get a 1080Ti after selling my current card. I also have a 780GTX from my old setup i could use as a PhysiX card, but i don't know if thats really worth doing.... any thoughts there? If I end up running 3 GPUs though, especially older tech, id probably need to step up the Power supply... then again, i dont know because if im going all newer stuffs, they're more energy efficient and 850 could actually pull it off

-I do enjoy the current case, although its MASSIVE, it's white, i love white, and its cool looking with big windows and lots of airflow! :) There is a deal right now on the i7-7700k where it comes with a dual fan RGB ASUS watercooled fan similar in concept to the h80 but, again, newer and DUAL FANZ, YO!

- Interesting on the SSDS! I would have thought that having a dedicated SSD in one of the hot swap bays would help smooth things out, shows how much i know. I'm excited about m.2, i'm learning about some super cool stuff you can do with it.

that was in line with my thinking, the i5 is such a strong CPU, im amazed that 7 years later, its still relevant

I found a few people who might actually be interested in buying this rig (desktop). I'd sell it for pretty much what an i7-7700k costs (not the 1080, the 780 thats in there and everything else (mobo, powersupply, case, etc) that might be the route to go! if i could get the razer core, 1080 gtx, and this rig all sold, it would be a start from scratch scenario, HOW FUN!!!!

What's a reasonable price for the system i listed above, and case?

ugh, i'm getting closer to finalizing the cart at microcenter, but i am having trouble selecting ram. is it better to use 2x8gb or 4x4gb? Crucial ballistix sport ram is i think the best choice so far.

2x8GB would be better as it leaves two free slots for upgrading.

Best memory depends on price, speed and timings. Of course the modules have to look decent in your build.

http://www.microcenter.com/product/458668/Vengeance_Series_16GB_2_x_8GB_DDR4-3000_PC4-24000_Desktop_Memory_Kit has good speed, timings, and cost.
