I'm trying to figure out a way to transfer files/folders from one computer to another (both running Windows 10) over wifi on the same network. I figured HomeGroup was something like that so I created a homegroup on my desktop. I went over to my laptop to try and join it but it says "There is currently no homegroup on the network". Both computers are on the same network, same 5GHz. Both have network discovery turned on, automatic setup of network connected devices checked, file and printer sharing on, and I've enabled Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections. Why can't my laptop find a homegroup? Is homegroup even something I should be looking at to transfer files using wifi?

In my experience the Windows homegroup feature has been finicky at best ever since its inception. Sometimes it works, sometimes you have to man-handle it to work, sometimes it just plain won't work, period.

I've found it easier to just use third-party software for this purpose. By far the simplest and easiest to use free software is Dukto (in my opinion).

If both your machines are connected to the same network, you just need to open Dukto on both of them, select the machine you want to transfer files to and drag the files onto the Dukto window.

I should mention that it has one disadvantage, though. If one of your machines gets disconnected for even a millisecond, the transfer will be interrupted and can't be resumed. If you need to transfer some very large files that would take a lot of time, you might want to find something more advanced but you shouldn't have a problem finding alternatives. Just google "LAN file transfer software" and pick something. :)

That seems to work. It's a bit slow (capping at around 60mbps) but it would be fine for small files.

I've used home group before. Complete rubbish TBH.

To find a computer you must first share a folder. Then the computer becomes visible. However you will only be able to see that one shared folder.

Once it's set up it works perfectly, but getting it to that stage takes a long time and sometimes the settings you used on one folder won't work on another.

My biggest complaint though is if you put your computer to sleep then forget home group. Every time a computer in that home group searches for a drive, turns on or off their machine, and some other every day tasks it will wake up the host machine.

Use 3rd party programs first, if they don't work then go back to Windows.

It's not a race to the bottom.
