so if most games only utilize the first core more than others would i benefit from overclocking core 1 to 4.8ghz and other 3 to 4.3ghz instead of all cores at 4.5ghz? or perhaps 1 at 5ghz with 3 at 4.2ghz?

Applications do not prefer cores. The OS schedules how they run and where they run accordingly.

Also you can't overclock a single core. It's all or nothing.

Probably not. I thought games utilised all available cores

Not really.  modern titles are getting better but ATM most games don't fully utilize all cores

Want to custom loop?  Ask me more if you are curious

Why does the X99 platform have to be all special with their NVMe on the CPU PCIe lanes and individual core overclocking (which honestly I don't really see a point anyway)?
