Hi, installed a new cpu cooler today. The backplate position is worrying me. Here's a picture. It looks like that small pin is touching the foil on the backplate. It isn't perfectly aligned, but i've already mounted everything before i noticed. Should i disassemble the whole cooler or leave it like this. It was a bloody pain in the ass to install

Edit, here's two more pictures.

The "Foil" is anti static material, it should be fine

Yea, that's its purpose, still feeling uneasy :D If it slips a little bit haha... Anyway, will post temp results later today when i oc. Looks like i'll have to remove the cable management plastic in order to plug in usb 3

Is the backplate made out of metal? If its not, then nothing to worry. If it is, remove it since it could short out the power phases

People think mobos are way more fragile than they are

They are made for consumers who don't know about electronics, so they do have quite a bit of fail-safes. It is still not good if the power phases short out. Even if nothing is damaged it could cause unexpected shutdowns.

A lot of people fear monger on forums like this, which doesn't help

i got mailed a mobo this week from a friend. The ups guy dropped it, 3 capacitors were off, and the fan connector looked like someone stepped on it

works perfectly

Also about CPUs without coolers, people literally say "yes it will burn out in seconds" which just isn't true

Maybe because I study electro-mechanical engineering? As I said before, mobos have fail-safes but it is never good to short power rails out. Even if nothing is damaged. Missing capacitors will lead to more noise in the power rail, not instant failure.

Ahh it'l be fine.Unless you OCD  and wanna tear it down.

Zipties work too.

Would it be unwise to just try to loosen it a bit from the back - realign and retighten whilst holding the cooler from the front (talking about half a mm here) ? If i should remove everything i have to unmount the mobo too. I can't remove the heatsink screws without removing the fan, and i can't put on the fan without putting the mobo outside of the case. It is definitely touching the foil but my eyes can't focus if it's close to touching the plate or if overtime the position will change

First, check if is metal, if its not, then don't eve bother. Otherwise, before you loosen up screws, just visually confirm that there is no contact between the choke pins and the metal backplate. If you suspect there is, you can simply put electrical tape over the choke pins just to be on the safe side.

It looks like the screw is angled to the side because it was not inserted and screwed in vertically, it would be unwise to yank it such that it fits as that will definitely damage the board i recommend you remount it properly as motherboards can be particularly difficult to even yank to the correct position.

It's touching the foil definitely, pressing into the plate. There's like a 3rd of a milimeter space. I've loosened the screws a little bit, maybe it was my mistake in the first place, but they can be tightened much more, which would probably pressure the washers too much and the mobo. Cooler is in place firmly even when screws were loosened, the pin is gently touching the foil now, no pressure. Ill leave it as it is.
