ram Mixed ram size

So I my old laptop has 12 gigs of ram. I racently decided to open to up to dust it off expecting to see 3x4 sticks or 3x6 but istead I saw a 4 and a 8 gig stick of different brands. I am a little confused why they would do this. My laptop is a HP envy 17 or something. Can someone please explain

4+8 is moar then 8, but cheaper then 8+8. Me thinks that's the whole point.

Did you buy it new? If not, someone likely upgraded the RAM themselves. 

 

If you did buy it new, that's kind of odd. I can understand different sizes but typically they'll use the same manufacturer for all the RAM on a single model.

because it has 2 ram slots in it and 16 is too overkill i guess

I know. That's why I said I got the different sizes, but the different RAM brand seems odd to me.

Memory channeling or whatever in most use cases doesn't do anything to affect performance, but people see how much RAM you have and would rather buy that. Even if you say "but this has dual channeling and can get double the memory bandwidth" but it doesn't improve performance, that's a harder sell than "this has 4 GB more than that one, which means you can have more Chrome tabs open!" Or something.

 

Also memory modules are in powers of 2, so you will never see 6GB of RAM on a stick.

That's the most likely reason, or maybe it's a model they spec'd up after the fact to use up some memory they had lying around from a different model. Who knows
