Hi Fellow forum members,

I recently picked myself a set of KRK Rokit 5's. I am having some problems, though. I am having some problems with hissing. I have seen that i need a DAC but don't really know. I am wondering if any of you guys know. I am using no soundcards and using a 3.5mm to rca cable but i am looking to upgrade them to xlr or trs.Is anyone got any recommendations, Dont need a very expensive solution around the £200 range.

Kind Regards

Gordon

At the most basic, I recommend an audio interface or monitor controller.  I assume you are trying to use them as speakers for a computer, in which case you can get something like a FocusRite Scarlett 2i2 interface and a couple of 1/4 Jacks to XLR cables.  I recommend getting balanced cables.

I own the bigger versions of these speakers the R6s and you dont need a interface. A simple Bal box to split the grounds would work fine.
https://www.interspaceind.com/audio-products/pc-bal-box-detail.html I use this and it works well with no his.
Its a bit tricky to find since its a specialist item but there not too bad to get in the UK. Get them for around £60.
Personally in my world theyre life savers as it stops 48V phantom power reaching my laptop or computer when I plug it into a mixing desk.

I would contend that it's not an interference issue, as OP is complaining about a hissing, rather than the buzz you'd expect from interference from power cabling. Which suggests that it's just a relatively high noise floor at some point in the chain or a poor connection somewhere. Check everything's plugged in fully and properly, set the source level to somewhere around 70% and then adjust the level on the speaker directly to get a suitable maximum listening level. in everyday use you can then adjust the volume from the source to suit whatever you're doing.

If it's actually a buzz you're hearing, then a DI box like the one Ahoy Hoy suggested (Alternative 1, Alternative 2) with XLR or balanced jack cables to the speakers. You'll want to minimise the length of the connection to the computer.

@Ahoy Hoy Your description of what a DI box does ("split the grounds") really irritates me, you know better.
