Hey all,

So it has been a very long time since actually upgrading my computer (last time was when dual cores were just coming out). I don't game much on my computer that often as I have consoles for that, but there are some games that I wish to play but unfortunately do not have a computer good enough for it. Games wanting to play include: Cities Skyline, Civilization 6, Stardew Valley and the like. Not much into the FPS games just RTS or RPG games. I will probably only be gaming in 1080P as that is the current monitor that I have, but maybe down the road upgrade to 1440, I don't see going to 4k. I have been looking at some of the new developments (and there have been many) in the field and have put together a rough build as to what I think I am looking for. I have a budget of approx $1200 to $1500 Canadian (I live in Canada). Was looking for a second opinion (as to if this is overkill or not) and clarification on some questions.

Here is the Part list: https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/QWjcjc all to fit in this case: http://www.corsair.com/carbide-series-spec-alpha-mid-tower-gaming-case-white-red

Some of the questions:

  1. Is the processor overkill? I don't need a unlocked one (as I don't overclock or know how to), but wondering if the 7500 would be better for some savings.
  2. I like the idea of a water cooled CPU, but again not sure if it is really worth it or if I should stick with the stock cooler.
  3. I currently have a SATA 3 SSD and 2TB HD in my PC. I was going to reuse these but wondering if the SSD should be upgraded as it is only 60GB and full already.
  4. Is an M.2 drive worth it as a boot drive, or should I compile the SSD and M.2 and just get a bigger SSD?
  5. The graphics card should be good enough for what I need it for and I don't see myself spending $500+ on a new one especially because I am getting a whole new rig.
  6. The PSU, is this too much? Should I decrease it?

Thanks for helping me out!

Not sure what the first part is referring to.

I just put the parts in there for the SSD as I am unsure as to if getting an M.2 was worth it or if I should get a larger SATA SSD.

1) I'd go with an i7 7700 (non k) - You had a z series board with a non k CPU, basically not required

2) No need to water cool a non k CPU, a nice air cooler will keep temps and noise down for less money

3) Keep the 2TB drive, 60GB SSD not worth keeping

4) m.2 is nice, I barely notice the difference on mine - just get a bigger SSD

5) 1060 is pretty good, 480 is better and will get better with more driver updates

6) PSU was OK, I switched to EVGA for less $$$

Echoing most other people:

1. Get a 7600K, is definitely worth the $20 extra

2. As long as you don't try to run a crazy overclock and want to save a few bucks, a Cryorig H7 or Hyper 212 EVO are both cheap options

3/4. Just buy a larger SSD and drop the M.2

5. Get an RX 480, they run a little better and all signs point to them aging better than the 1060. Plus, you get an extra 2 GB of VRAM if you switch to 1440p some day

5. Wattage is fine, but get an EVGA non-SFX (cheaper and more reliable)

But I have listed 7700 not 7600 ... aka i7 not i5 also you're neglecting OP's requirements:

Doesn't know how/want to overclock

You also left the build wit h2x small in-needed SSD's go with 1 large or a large SSD + smaller m.2 boot drive - but budget doesn't allow the latter option

I am calm lol, but I don't see how an i5 is better long term than i7

Its also more expensive than the OP's build

https://ca.pcpartpicker.com/list/gsf8Cy

My point is you just discounted my build and said "mines better long term" with zero reasons why - aka cause you can overclock or it has more hard drive space, can have crossfire etc etc

and I think you're wrong, the i7 would be better long term for someone unwilling to overclock :)

Hell ye I changed the GPU, 480 is a better card long term, we know that. 7700k gets hot when pushed to 5ghz, its a vanilla 7700 running 4ghz on 4 cores or 4.2 on 1, it won't suffer the same issues, but as you insist:
