so I have a plan to convert my laptop into a desktop. the screen died a while ago so its basically a desktop already. but I want to go the whole way and make a custom case (thin stained plywood ends and bottom with cutouts for two fans, connectors and dvd drive and then glass top and sides. the motherboard would sit in the center for max cooling and awesomeness).

I would like to put two fans into it so I am going to try something like this:

is this going to work? I don't see why I would not. I looked up a few conversions and nothing was quite this extreme, but I don't see why it could not be.

its a high end laptop (toshiba satellite p70-a with upgraded ram [32GB] and a HDD-SSD setup) so I don't feel like I am wasting money by converting it.

i mean why not just save for an actual desktop?

Other than that looks cool

Great concept. Would you try to do an external GPU adapter too? If so, then I would just get a PSU, use a test end on the 24 Pin the use that for all the externals (GPU, SATA adapter/Molex for controllers, etc). Otherwise, using a fan splitter if the proprietary board uses 3 or 4 pin for the CPU fan may be easier. Just a thought.

I debated the GPU adapter... to expensive. I will look at a fan splitter, I would assume the board uses a 3 pin, I would have to check, would I run into any problems with power if I did a fan splitter from the board? also could I still use a fan controller?

May have to stick your way for fan control, that is more BIOS based if using only motherboard adapters. And an average fan at full load only draws 2-10W, so it matters on what they system currently draws and efficiencies already in place. A fan controller would draw more, as it reserves and divides power plus also for the LCD, etc. Really have to look deeper numbers wise
