Is this a good overclock?

Hi guys!

 

Here's my setup:

 

Asus Maximus V Formula Z77

i7 2600k cooled with Corsair H90

 

I managed to get a stable 4.6 Ghz overclock with 1.384 Vcore and temps never go above 80 celsius while small fft stress testing (prime95).

 

Is this a good oc or should I step it down a little bit?

It's good. Step down if you feel it's not stable enough.

That is fine. Personally I would lower it, because I like my temperatures below 60, but that is up to you.

How long are you stress testing for? Different people have different opinions on what constitutes "stable." Stress testing for five minutes is different than stress testing for 24 hours. And I can't see how a lower multiplier at that same voltage becomes "unstable."

 

Also keep in mind you'll rarely see those synthetic loads (and therefore temps) in everyday use, unless you're encoding videos, then it might come close.

Not bad. I got a Pentium 4 to 3.4GHz at 1.8 or 1.9 volts I think. Whenever you tried to do anything like watch a video or go on the internet, it would freeze.

I only did it for 15minutes. I know it's a really short time for calling it stable but I don't do any video editing. I just play games like BF4 on this pc.

Which Vcore adjustment is better? Offset or manual? Which one lowers itself when cpu is on idle?

Offset is harder to use, and should only be messed with after you've determined a stable voltage using manual mode. Offset should lower the Vcore when the computer downclocks at idle. I've read somewhere on a Sandy Bridge overclocking guide that you run the risk of the voltage dropping too low when the CPU downclocks to be stable when idle. I say just leave it at manual.

Ok...but you won't play BF4 for just 15 minutes.

Whether you do video editing or not, you NEED to have several hours of stability testing done on it (ideally 24, but many will also say 6-8 hours is enough).

Not all errors pop up within the first 30 minutes; errors may not show up until a few hours in.

Example: I ran a quick 2-hour stability test on my CPU overclock (bumped the stable overclock I had up even more), and thought it should be okay (seeing I was going to tweak it a bit more later). I was wrong, system would blue-screen in BF3 45min - 1 hour in. I first thought it was my new graphics card (since I had that overclocked as well). Nope.
