Hi everyone.

I'm looking at building a new PC for gaming.

my biggest question is should I get the intel i5 7600k or is it worth the extra £100 to get the Intel i7 7700k?

is there a big enough performance difference to make the £100 worth the spend or shall I use the £100 to get a decent cpu cooler or more RAM for example?

thanks in advance

--------

thanks for your advice I have decided to go with the i7 as most people see this as the most long lasting

Two years ago, I would've told you to get the i5.  However, games are gradually gaining the ability to use more cores/threads.  In fact, as @nerdslayer1 said, i5s are starting to bottleneck games.  A good example of this would probably be BF1, which can use up to 16 threads.  Anyway, now that we're in 2017 and things have changed, I would recommend getting the i7.  i5 processors are still good for gaming, but longevity is no longer one of their strong suits.  Besides, i7 processors have always had very long lifespans.  There's a reason why the i7 870 from almost 10 years ago is still a decent gaming processor.

Depends on your budget, on how capable you are to upgrade you PC in the following years and the games that you are goinf to play.

Guessing that you have a tight budget, Id suggest you to go for the i5 and save some money for a better cooler and the ram actually doesn't have that much impact in the performance (as long as It isnt a shitty one, any regular 2400MHz ram should do the job. Since for PURE gaming you dont need more than 8Gb, dont upgrade It [And youll have some spare to do some multitasking, I can vouch for that]). The latest locked i5 will perform just fine and wont give you any performance issue unless you have a 1080/titan/980ti, which doesnt seem to be your situation.

If you have spare money and you are really willing to spend It, go for the i7. But I have to say that I have my old i5 4690 and performs great, It have never bottlenecked my pc (I also have to say that I have a 760 since I cant spend 350-400€ every 2 years) and I have 0  complains, I can play any game, I even olayed BF1 at high and 1080p at solid 60fps.

I also have to say that if you are goinf to play only a few intensive performance games, go for the i5 no doubt.

Im sorry to say this but sometimes I think that there are a lot lf people in this forum who just doenst realise that there are people who cant spend happily 300€ in a cpu and those 100€ actually make the difference. Not everyone has 1000€ to spend in a pc.

P.D: as soon as I find some time I will create a PC Buying guide with different buget tiers and gaming tiers, because in case anyone havent noticed the i3 7100 is capable to run any modern game at 60fps 1080 and high settings. You dont have to spend 300€ in a CPU to game in 2017 (nor in 2016).
