GTX 980 Overclocking Issues

I have upgraded my drivers several times, but not a full uninstall-reinstall. I'm not sure whether or not that makes a difference.

I would definitely try a fresh install. Stuff can get messed up and just updating can fail to fix the problems.

Last May, I got a GTX 980. It was a huge step up from my previous card, a 950, however, I decided to run benchmarks, and things changed.

(Note: The RAM is performing below standard. This is because my MoBo is bottlenecking it. I do not need help with that)

So I tried overclocking it. Time and time again, it would start to improve performance, and then the clock would plummet to worse than stock.

This clock of 539mhz stays until I restart my system.

I have no idea what's going on. I have tried using both MSI afterburner, and EVGA Precision X with equal results.

@RandommLOL if the OC stays ONLY when the PC is on and then when you restart or turn it off and turn on again, then you should try to set MSI afterburner to "start with windows" and see if that happens again.

I have. An OC runs just fine, but once it's put under load, the OC fails, and the clock falls to 539 mhz. Not a 539 mhz OC. A 539 mhz CLOCK.

Maybe that is something like a 'safe-mode' for the GPU when it is really stressed? Have you tried to monitor it, see if it has a point during the load where it just gives up? Like when it reaches 80% and 75C degrees, the OC fails.

What PSU do you have and what are the temps of the video card?

I have tried with two PSUs, it does the same thing with both.

The temps generally stay around 50C.

The temps remain at safe levels, but I generally benchmark it after messing with the OC. I OC in stages, and it remains safe, but after a few stages the clock falls.
