So, I recently bought a Gigabyte GTX 970 (https://www.amazon.com/Gigabyte-GeForce-Gaming-GDDR5-Graphics/dp/B00NH5T1MS/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1488704335&sr=8-2&keywords=gtx+970+windforce ) off a friend of mine.

I was trying to install it today. Long story short, I've been using an Antec 300 case up until now --> upgraded to a Fractal Design Define S case so it could accomodate the 970's longer length (compared to the ASUS GTX 660 I've been using).

So I transfer everything from the Antec to the Fractal Design case. Everything seems to be going well until boot up. Initially I get 3 beeps (1 long, 2 short) --> fixed that problem. I determined that it was due to the 970 not properly seated in the slot --> my motherboard is kinda stupid. The put the SATA ports right underneath where any long graphics card would go. Had some wires on top of the ports, which caused the card to incorrectly seat. Rerouted the cables, problem solved.

Then comes the next (and current) problem. Boot up the PC, I get the inital Intel boot up screen. Stays on that page for about 1 min 30 sec - there's 1 beep every 30 seconds or so (each beep doesn't reoccur at the same time). Then a black screen shows up. Best I can describe it, is as if you are in a full-screen DOS, there's the blinking underscore as if it's waiting for you to type something (in hindsight, I never tried typing anything - just rebooted afterwards).

Any ideas what it is? It's definitely graphics card related, as I put my ASUS GTX 660 back in, and it's working fine.

I never actually tried that. My guess is that I would not be able to access it. I tried running in Safe Mode (spamming F8) - but it seemed to be unresponsive.

Is that can or can't?

I'll have to give it a go tomorrow. I'll report back then.

With my GTX 660 in, it does not detect the internal GPU (though, not sure if it makes a difference - the only on board display option is HDMI).

Also, I've never updated my BIOS. So I guess I'll give that a go and then drop the 970 in and see what happens.

Just an update:

So I updated my BIOS, and that seems to been the trick.

Appreciate all the help from everyone!
