Non-Z overclocking

Hey, I have both an MSI H61M-p8/w31 and an ASUS P8H67M-PRO boards and even though neither are Z boards, they both allow me to change the CPU multiplier, as you can see in the picture from my MSI board, but it only allows me to up to 37X in my i5 2500 non-K. Would this chane in a 2500k? Also, I disabled intel turbo boost and set the multiplier to 37X, is this a dumb thing to do? I havent saved the changes yet.

37 is the regular boost speed.  You're simply putting all cores on boost speed whereas Intel normally only lets 1 core do that.

 

No worries, I've had my own 2500 non-k run with x38 to x41 multipliers (on a Z77 motherboard) on all cores for around 4 years now and it hasn't crashed or misbehaved once.  No need to increase the voltage either, it works just fine.

 

Last I checked, those boards will not allow you to go beyond boost speed even with a 2500K.  So don't bother upgrading the CPU unless you buy a Z motherboard too.

No, not what OP is doing. If you pump 2v through a CPU then you can kill it but changing the ratio will just cause it to crash

No worries, I've had my own 2500 non-k run with x38 to x41 multipliers (on a Z77 motherboard) on all cores for around 4 years now and it hasn't crashed or misbehaved once.  No need to increase the voltage either, it works just fine.

 

Last I checked, those boards will not allow you to go beyond boost speed even with a 2500K.  So don't bother upgrading the CPU unless you buy a Z motherboard too.

Would putting at 37X with intel turbo boost disabled increase my fps in battlefield 1? My i5 2500 is at 100% most of the time. Also, can I overclock my i5 2500 in a z board just as good as a 2500k?

It may make a tiny bit of a difference, most likely it'll drop the FPS a little less often than it does now.  Only way to know for sure is to try it. 

 

In a Z board the 2nd and 3rd generation non-K CPUs will only go 4 steps above max turbo, so for the 2500 that's x41 (or 4.1GHz) max.  That's 4.1 on all 4 cores, which is a noticeable difference over stock speeds.

Z boards are still quite expensive for the 2nd and 3rd generation processors but I paid £72 for my ASUS P8H67M-PRO as well, and that same board is being returned for a replacement as it has some problems with the SATA ports, so if I find myself a good deal for a Z68, maybe I'll buy it and get a refund instead of a replacement and if I need a new cpu in the future, I can always get an i7 2600k or something. Sorry to bother, but, do you know if I could change the CPU multiplier to 4X above turbo frequency in a P67 board? Because I just found an ASUS P8P67 board exactly the same price for the item and same price for postage with the exact same description template as the listing for my H67M-PRO board, also both are from poland.

Been digging through my parts cabinet and I found the GA P67A-UD3P-B3 that preceded my Z77 board.

hmm ...

 

I could do 50 EUR including shipping, but I can't verify that mine still works without quite a bit of work. 

Fairly confident it works though, I only used it a couple of weeks and then bought my Z77.  It was working just fine when I pulled it, the other one suited my PC's color scheme better.
