So I'm looking to build a new PC. My current rig is running an i5 4670k which is still fine for gaming but I'm looking for something more productive and thought the Ryzen series might be a good idea for the 16 cores and better performance than intel for the price.

Its also worth noting that I would need VT-d if I went for an intel chip which is unfortunately only in their expensive high end chips.

I'm looking towards unRAID for the virtualisation. I need something that will enable me to run a windows desktop and several windows servers/ test machines from the same box. These Servers won't really be doing much in the way of processing power (more or less test machines) so I was looking at the ryzen 1700x-1800x. I would also move my NAS storage onto the machine and host the file share through the unRAID NAS.

(yes I could run virtual box but that's no fun)

It's also worth noting that I will be using the desktop VM for casual gaming as well.

So my question is I believe the latest unRAID linux kernal is 4.9.10 and I have read that the zen support was only added in the later 4.10. How will this match up with Ryzen? Is anyone else looking into this sort of setup?

Someone asked me this before, But anyway, Get a xeon if you are going to have servers, A used 2670 from ebay is really cheap, and you can get Two 2660s and a motherboard in the uk for under £500

I did look at Xeons already but, as stated above I am also looking to do a bit of casual gaming and I'm not sure how well the Xeon running at 2.60GHz would hold up in this situation compared to something running at 3.4 - 3.6

I read somewhere that clock speed doesn't always matter, Games suggest certain clock speeds because low end processors don't normally have high clock speeds.

If you are worried, Try looking for benchmarks on games.
