So, I currently have a 1TB HDD and would like to add a 250GB 960 EVO m.2 ssd to my system and use it as a boot drive. However from reading articles online it looks like alot of work re-installing windows 7 onto a m.2 (nvme) drive.

Is there anyway I could just migrate the OS to the SSD?

Specs

CPU: Intel Core i7 6700k @ 4.6GHz

CPU Cooler: EK Water Loop - Pastel White Fluid

Video/Graphics Card: Zotac GTX 1060 6GB Single Fan (+220 core, +225 mem, manual)

PSU: Corsair RM750i Modular PSU - with Silverstone white extensions

RAM: 16GB Corsair Dominator Platinum (8GB x 2) @ 3000MHz

Peripherals:

  • AOC 29" 1080p Monitor (2x)
  • ASUS ROG Cerberus Headset
  • Corsair K90 Keyboard
  • Corsair RGB Strafe Mouse

Use Acronis and clone your boot drive to M.2, however I'm not sure about driver support with W7. If it works, awesome. Cloning is going to be the easier way to ensure your W7 drivers for important things still exist, such as WiFi drivers

But with cloning I have like 700GB of storage used so I can't clone 700GB to the 250gb ssd?

How much how much space is actually being utilized? If it's less than 250, you should be fine. Otherwise, you'll be all messed up. But yes, generally, you want to clone to same sized drive or larger...

Do you have the W7 install media? You can always just do a clean install. Just make sure you have SP1 readily available, otherwose you might have a hard time pulling updates from Windows server.

Its a 1TB drive with 700GB utilised. I'll also be picking up a 2TB HDD but my issue is apparently Windows 7 installs and NVME dont work so good together.

I know this will probably sound stupid to you, but why not install Windows 10?

Quite a few reasons but mainly because I prefer the UI and there are almost 0 bugs with win7, except for outdated code

Windows 10 isn't this flawed POS as many paint as. I'd look at W10, since it'll have better driver support for M.2.

If they don't work, then don't use M.2. Put it on 2.5 SSD instead. Want more speed? 2.5 SSD RAID 0.

If you want to stick with W7, then pick hardware that'll work well with it.
