For the past few months, my PC has been crashing/freezing when under high load. By this I mean when I play graphics intensive games or run a bunch of programs and downloads all at once. The screen completely freezes and all sound cuts off with a sharp sound and my only option is to turn it off either with the power switch or holding down the power button on my case.

I have tried many solutions for a long time such as reseating the graphics card and ram sticks, updating drivers, testing the memory and hard drive, etc. I have also checked the temperatures of my pc during times of gaming etc. and all the temperatures are normal.

I've narrowed down the options to this:

-It's definitely a hardware issue, since I've tried resetting windows twice and that still didn't fix the problem.

-Its not the Graphics Card or HDD

-It could possibly be a ram issue but I've tested the ram and I've also tried running with 1 ram stick at a time and that still doesn't work.

-It's most likely the powersupply.

What do you guys think I should do? Is it the powersupply and should I try replacing it? Or has someone else had the same issue and was something else the issue?

My Specs: (None of them are OC'd)

CPU = Intel® Core™ Processor i5-6600K 3.50GHz (
GPU = MSI GeForce® GTX 970 Gaming 4G 4GB GDDR5
Memory = 16GB (8GBx2) DDR4/3000MHz Dual Channel Memory
PSU = EVGA 850W GQ 80 Plus Gold Power Supply
Motherboard = MSI Z170A Gaming Pro CARBON ATX
HDD = 2TB (2TBx1) SATA-III 6.0Gb/s 64MB Cache 7200RPM HDD

I appreciate all help and concern :)

  • 2 weeks later...

I thought I havent got any replies, so im sorry for responding so late.

When im not overclocked, I still crash like I would when Overclocked so I don't think that is the issue.

It for sure isn't overheating since I have checked the temperatures during/before the crash on my second monitor and the temperatures are all normal and actually are in a good range since I do liquid cool my CPU.

I've also tried resetting windows before twice and that still didn't seem to fix the problem aswell as trying to play without my graphics card in and that still crashes.

Its most likely an issue with the ram, powersupply or voltages.

I have also noticed when it crashes the hard drive light that beeps on the front of my case stops beeping, could it be a hard drive failure?

sound driver conflicts.

again, heat, even though your sensors tell you otherwise.

you can do a scan disc and repair ( for the HD ). see if it finds anything.

run memtest or even windows built in for the moment.

the graphics card one of those that they forgot to put thermal; pads on?

the HD's in raid? could be a problem there. firmware.

if so, what configuration? maybe 1 drive at a time?

the light blinks it means the HD is working. no worry there.

you can run 1 stick of ram at a time. and in different slots to test.

what's the pagefile like?
