Motherboard question

Go to solution Solved by Oshino Shinobu,

If the board does not already have the updated BIOS (if it's new, it should have it, but not all will), then you will need a CPU that is compatible with the current BIOS in order to do the BIOS update.

The actual process involves downloading a file, putting it on a USB stick, booting into the BIOS, selecting update BIOS and point it to the file on the USB stick. Some boards have a USB BIOS flashing feature that allows the BIOS to be flashed without needing to boot. Unfortunately, that board does not have that feature, so you will need a working and compatible CPU to update the BIOS.

I just purchased a Gigabyte Z87X D3H 1150 socket motherboard to replace my cheap Lenovo motherboard. The processor going in is an I5 4460 and I might have to do a bios update to get the motherboard to work correctly.

Just how do I go about doing it?  I've never had to do that. Just looking for any advice to help out.

Is there a reason why that CPU wouldn't work without a bios update?

because the board don't know how to use it without a update. Its a haswell refresh chip.

But if you buying this board now, it probably already has the newer bios.

The CPU is Haswell Refresh but the board was released when only normal Haswell was around. When Haswell-R was released, boards got BIOS updates in order to work with the new CPUs. If the board is used, there is a chance the previous owner did not update the BIOS.

If you already have the board, you'll basically have to hope that the BIOS was updated. If not, you'll need to find a Haswell non-refresh CPU you can borrow to update the BIOS. A local computer shop may be willing to help you if you don't have any friends with a CPU you could use.

Ohhh.  I thought Z87 boards couldn't use haswell refresh?  Or just without a bios update I assume?

Ok.  Perhaps a Z97 board would be better then for op to get?

Pretty sure those would work on the refresh CPUs would any need for a bios update right?

I might have to hit up a shop or find some down where I live that have a cpu I can borrow. Or I could just buy a cheap chip to update it. But I will check the board upon receiving it to see if my chip will boot on it. If not I know why.
