I have an iMac G4 that I have been meaning to fix for a while, and in that time, it was sitting on the ground (roughly 6 months) opened up, which I know is a bad idea. I just got the motivation recently to try and fix it, as I personally believe it is the best machine Apple has ever created. (still trying to figure our why I let it sit on the ground for so long if I think it's their best computer) Basically, everything is hooked up, which I have double checked multiple times, but it won't boot. If it's plugged in and the power button is pushed, the fan will start spinning, but nothing else happens. The hard drive might be spinning, but if so it's indistinguishable from fan noise. According to the owner, it has some version of OS X installed (10.4 I think? I got it from someone else as a gift, and I can guarantee that it worked before I took it apart 6 months ago, but I needed to replace the drive for some reason I forgot) and it should be able to boot from that. The thing I'm having trouble understanding is what the issue is. It doesn't make any sounds, and I can't get any signs of life from a USB mouse or keyboard. It appears to not be posting, and I can't seem to figure out why. I tried taking out all the RAM to see if that gave me an error, but it did the exact same thing, which is nothing. (except turn on the fan) I have also tried connecting it to an external monitor with no luck. In a few days I plan on digging through my stuff and looking for some way of connecting to the hard drive with another computer, something like an IDE docking station. I still don't think it's the hard drive because it's not even giving an error when I remove the RAM, but at this point it's still worth a try. I would love to be able to fix this machine, because like I mentioned before, I love the design of this machine.

Thanks for the help!

Have you tried resetting the PMU on your mac?

On a side note: The iMac G4 is my favourite mac of all time. Followed by the G3 as I have many fond (many bad though) memories with those.

Yep, I tried resetting the PMU. That didn't seem to do anything. I also tried taking out the CMOS battery and putting that back in, but no luck.

Looks like it's too far gone to be saved by us. Looks like you'll have to find someone experienced to fix it. Or... you can make i sweet mod by putting a Mac Mini in it.

I know this post is a bit old now, but I wanted to mention that I was able to get a Mac Mini taken apart today, and fitted inside the iMac. This is cool and all, but I also broke a screwdriver bit and sliced my hand open while trying to remove part of the power supply. Yes, I was probably doing it wrong. Doesn't matter. I would attach pictures, but I forgot to take some and now I'm not at work (that's where I'm working on it)

Sorry to hear that. Looking forward to those pictures though! the iMac is my favourite Macintosh computer of all time, followed by the iMac DV.
