Server Parts Advice

I am looking for a replacement for my Dead motherboard in my i5 3340 System, someone told me i would be better off selling all the working parts and going with a Xeon x5650, And i need advice to actually buy it, From what i can see, there seems to be multiple types of Socket 1366 Motherboard chipsets, Which one do i need? And where is the best place to buy it?

 

Also, What is the best rated (Using the toms hardware power supply guide) Power supply for ~£50? 

 

An ideal motherboard would allow a fair amount of ram (16GB+) Some PCIe slots (10GbE? or raid cards), Be ATX or EATX size (To fit in a standard rack mount case) and be cost effective.

A good cooler would be active, Quiet and good quality.

 

Overall budget: £400 GBP (More or less) (Needs to be complete, Though I do have DDR3 RAM)

For £400, you can get a Xeon E5-2670 and an X79 motherboard (performs considerably better than the X5650). BTW, do you want this PC for server usage?

Yes, Game servers, File Server, UBNT Controller, Mumble Server. Have plenty of things lined up for it.

Then you will probably be using a lot of VMs. Definitely get the E5-2670, as it has 8 cores and 16 threads! And, if you want, you can get a dual socket motherboard and get 16 cores and 32 threads.

PS. I think that I had recommended the X5650 to you, but I didn't know you could spend up to £400 on this PC

The £400 Is Value of what working components i have now + Some cash that i can save up.

The first! You can find one for around $50 on eBay, an absolute steal for the money. (Motherboards are a bit pricey though)

Since i am in the UK, I can only find the E5 2650 for around £50, I did spot a V2 for 70, But its bidding and will probably go higher.

Can't you order from eBay US? Because PC Parts are considerably cheaper there...

If you can't, the 2650 will work. It has 2 less cores, but is still pretty fast. (however, if you can find an X5650 for cheaper, getting the X5650 wouldn't be a bad idea...)

x5650 is "200 dollar fully kitted second hand server" range... not i5 3340 range.

Yeah, I can't find any for less than £200 (Which is ALOT, Seeing as i would like to get a power supply and a bit more ram into the budget)

Yes, but you are getting 16 cores and 32 threads.... You can get something like an EVGA 600B and DDR3 RAM is pretty cheap on eBay right now...

True, However by the time i get rid of these parts, those deals will probably be gone, I think i will have a better look when i actually have the money to buy the parts right away, But good advice, I will take it on and scrap the x5650 idea (Although it's a good fallback if i don't have enough money)
