So, when I started building my PC I had bought the MSI 970a Gaming Pro Carbon motherboard bundled with the AMD FX-8350 for $150. As I started asking questions regarding Overclocking, I began to get the impression that the 990fx chipset would be better for overclocking and so I went out and bought the ASRock Fatal1ty 990fx Killer motherboard, installed it, and began playing in the UEFI. I can get 4.5GHz on the MSI board, but only 4.4GHz on the ASRock. I know that .1 difference isn't much, but I feel the MSI board is the one I should keep in my build.

What do you guys think?

I think that I dont want to think about someone buy FX now of all times.

It's my first build and was actually 100% spontaneous. Everything just snowballed once I walked into Fry's. LOL Also, when I started buying the parts AMD hadn't really released jack-squat about Ryzen. All we knew was that something new was coming and I'm impatient when it comes to tinkering with computers. I want this one in good working shape so it can be used as a secondary PC once I get a Ryzen build done.

It depends on a lot, gonna look up that MSI when get home, but know that not all mobos work the the dame for instance the ram settings i use on my asus are totally different when compared to them on my gigabyte, your asrock might get at 4.5 ghz to but the settings need to probably vary. Though i will look into it more when i get home from work.

Thanks for the reply. The main reason I'm asking is mostly due to the fact the MSI board is so much newer than the ASRock and, from my limited understanding, has a fairly beefy power delivery system for 970.

Indeed this time it seems that they went with something decent, it can be seen it has 8 phases, though the fatal1ty has even a beefier a 12+2 one. The good thing about the 990FX chip is that it has a bigger HT link, which in combination with a decent ram overclock can give you quite a boost. I looked up the board (msi carbon one) but there's not much info on it, in all honesty you will have to experiment yourself and see which board gives the better results. Do be warned that there's more to AMD overclocking then just raising the multiplier and v core voltage, there's the CPU-NB link speed, HT Link Speed and FSB, plus ram settings, playing with all of this and getting the right values can boost system responsiveness a lot, and smooth things out. But you can also easily loose yourself in it as well, i've been going at it for way over a month, and i still find new things to tweak.

On the MSI 970A Gaming Pro Carbon I was able to increase the FSB up to 225 without changing anything else. I couldn't even get that on the ASRock. I don't need crazy boosts or anything so I'm just seeing what the best is I can get with as few changes as possible.
