Difference between external and internal players?

Go to solution Solved by Oshino Shinobu,

If you're just using it to watch Blu-Rays, they're the same. The internal one is faster at writing from what I understand (12X writer vs the 6X on the external), but that's just between those two models, not specifically an internal/external thing.

You can get external drives that can do everything an internal drive can, the only difference is whether they're designed to be in the case or out.

Hi so I need a blu-ray player for my PC, and my case doesn't have 5.25" bays so I  wanted to go for a external one. But my question is, is there something the internal one can do that a external one cant?

Like whats the difference between this external one or this internal one

Thanks!

Aside form being mobile, not much. USB 2.0 vs SATA may be an issue, but unlikely.

Nope, they're functionally the same. Hell, you can't take the internal one around with you everywhere, so that's a plus for the external one. Go for it.

Woo! Thanks guys!

The one he picked is 3.0, so not even that.

And yeah, pretty sure DVDs are incapable of saturating USB 2.0's bandwidth, so good on that front.

The OP is buying a Blu-Ray drive, not a DVD drive.  In the case of my LG WH14NS40 which has a mad BD read speed of 12x, that's 54MB/s or 432mbps.  This is well beyond the practical speed of USB 2.0 which in practice, caps out around 30MB/s despite being faster on paper.  Though this bottleneck would only be an issue if you were remuxing a large amount of Blu-Rays or restoring backups from a stack of discs or something else that has you putting a LOT of data through your disc drive.
