Hey there, I want to know if I install games and programs on a HDD and my OS on a standard SSD or M.2 SSD, would it affect the performance of the installed games or programs when running ? (frame drop, lag, slow rendering) etc.

My rig:(currently)

Gigabyte GA Z170M - D3H
intel core i7 6700k
Cooler master hyper 212 cooler
32gb kingston hyperX 2666 (8x4)
Nvidia gtx 1060 6gb (gigabyte)
Cooler master B700W PSU
120GB kingston 100 UV SSD (Simple storage)
240GB kingston 400 UV SSD (OS & Programs installed)
Corsair spec 1
Windows 10 home Single Language

Problems facing:

Falling short of space (heavy games and programs)
Most games locked at 30FPS when my card can do better

Planning to:

Buy a 250GB M.2 soon (which one should I go for ?)
Buy a 2TB HDD (which one should I go for ?)

***************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************
After buying the 250GB M.2 and the 2TB HDD and having the rest of my hardware as it is, how do I set things up for optimum results (Ready to start from scratch like clean installation)

Also if you could connect with me on email then nothing like it. (mayursawant.tech@gmail.com)

Thankyou, cheers ?

What games are locked at 30? Some games on PC are dumb and locked at 30 when every system can do better than that. (ahem Need For Speed Rivals)

I'd say get a 2TB HDD next, enough to fit a huge steam library. Performance is generally the same between HDD and SSD in most games, except games that load a lot of textures (ie GTAV). And loading times are longer, but just make a coffee or something :P

idk

It may sound a bit obvious but check your game settings and double check to see if there is a frame slider, I know quite a few games can default to 30. For a steam library definitely go for the 2tb hdd, as for setting it up just partition it into a single space and default the install location to the new drive. You can use your other ssd for one or two games where you want fast load times.

System

Case- Thermaltake Core V21 / CPU - i7 4790 / GPU - Asus Strix GTX 1070 / Mobo - Gigabyte Z97 mx / Ram - 4x4 gb GSkill Sniper DDR3 1866 / Storage - 2x WD Black 1tb drives, 1x 120gb OCZ SSD / Cooler - Cooler Master TX3 / PSU - EVGA G2 650w / Audio - Sennheiser PC 350 SE / Monitor - Asus 1920X1080 @60hz / Keyboard & Mouse - Cooler Master Devastator II / OS - Windows 10 Enterprise

HAHA Thanks @Droidbot

I like open world games more than anything else.

so

The games that I have locked at 30FPS are

FC primal

AC syndicate

Where as games on my system that do 50FPS or even more are

Watchdogs 2

The crew

TC division

Also, How about ?

A 250GB m.2 and making it a primary (OS)

A 250GB standard SSD for games (installations)

A 120GB standard SSD for Applications like Adobe CS6 (Photoshop, Aftereffects, Premier, Audition, Lightroom) (installations + disk cache)

A 2TB HDD for simple storage

You think il be able to draw more performance out of this setup ? at the same time also keeping things sorted ?

PS: No I dont have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, but almost on the verge of it :P

That's a good setup with all of those SSDs, but why not sell them and buy like a 750GB Crucial MX300 or something?

Also that's strange, since FCP shouldn't be capped at all and I'm not sure about Syndicate (I haven't played a AC game since III)

idk

Sounds good to me, but since I sometimes work with 4K videos which require a lot of space for caching, raw footage, compressed out, renders etc which I am absolutely falling short of right now. Thats why I was thinking of the 2TB.

4k scrubbing in certain tools would be slowed down by the HDD. I'd say get a fancy NVME m.2 SSD and use that for space and put your OS on a SATA drive

idk

hmmm.. but OS on sata drive wont slowdown the overall system ?

SATA SSD, no. You'll still have fast boots, fast program opens, generally the same speed you have now.

But when you edit it'll be smoother.. but this is just my opinion.

Imho an m.2 is kinda overkill for just the os and basic utilities, that speed would be better suited for games or your adobe stuff.
