Need WOL NIC

Fellow techies,

I purchased an Intel NIC that supports WOL but I never seemed to be able to get it to work. The drivers (both new and second to newest) didn't agree with Windows 7 and caused BSOD f4 all the time. The NIC I purchased was the Intel Gigabit CT PCIE Network Adapter EXPI9301CTBLK.

 

Has anyone had this issue before?  What would be a good WOL NIC?

Instructions for frustration management:  

1) Sit at desk.   2) Repeatedly slam forehead against desk.

 

I never said I was smart, just smart enough to be dangerous.

Are you using the drivers provided by intel or the ones built into windows 7? Drivers also don't matter when WOL is concerned, as the WOL process is not running at os level. You probably need to enable wake by PCIe device in your bios.

 

Is there any reason why you can't use your onboard NIC?

My onboard NIC does not support WOL. :'(

There are times when I am at school when I need access to my pc at home. To conserve energy I leave it off or at least on sleep mode.

 

I used the drive directly from Intel. I tried every setting in both Windows and BIOS(UEFI) and I couldn't get it to boot up or wake up. I am not giving up on Intel as I trust their stuff, the NIC was better than the built-in NIC, and it may have been a case of the WOL not working when I bought this used NIC from ebay.

The drivers were not great until the latest one. However, Intel nics or their drivers are not playing nice with Win 7. What would be a good nic that I can use as a replacement? I do need WOL.

Are you sure you got everything network wise configured correctly? For example, you would need port forwarding or some other system to get it to work from the outside (assuming you use NAT, which you probably do).

 

Have you been able to get it to work locally?

WOL works now, but I get a BSOD 124 which means (from what I can diagnose) that the old driver windows automatically installs is a version windows can't work with very well, or the second to newest is causing the problem. Only way to truly know is to start from scratch.... I can't really do that as I only have one Win 7 code left and I am saving it as a last resort.
