Hi, i have a hard drive that has a very strange problem.  it is VERY SLOW but all my software tells me that the drive is perfectly fine.  does anyone have a program for windows that will run tests on the drive to determine if the drive is good or bad???  Check Disk is not very helpful as i have ran it and nothing has helped.  if the drive turns out to be bad i am not gonna be sad as it was pulled from a laptop that was having it HDD replaced with an SSD :D.

i need one that will run tests that will determine if the drive is good or not.  i know the program you are talking about but it is only for testing the speeds of the drive.  not determining if the drive is bad or good.

What drive brand?

Western Digital - Use WD Lifeguard Diagnostics (Run the Extended SMART test)

Seagate - Use Seatools (Run the Long Generic test)

HGST - Use WinDFT (Run Extended test)

Do note that these programs will scan the drive end to end and will take many hours depending on the size / RPM of the drive. For me, my 4TB Red takes around 8 hours, my 4TB WD Re SAS drive takes around 6.5 hours.

Also, please get Crystal Disk Info and screenshot the SMART Data. It's usually really easy to guess the life of a hard drive from the SMART data.

You have some issues with the drive according to the start data, the reallocated sector count is 174, which should be 0, you have 413 seek error rates, which also should be 0. Finally, you have a 65,372 current pending sector count which should also be 0.

The drive works for now, but it is slowly dying. I would keep a eye on the uncorrectable sector count, currently it is 0, if that starts increasing, back up your data right away.

Have you gotten WD lifeguard Diagnostics and run the extended smart test? You get it here: http://support.wdc.com/downloads.aspx?lang=en

Ah, just let it keep going. The test will fail if the drive can't continue. How long has it been running?

Also, please quote me when you make a reply...

9 Hours soo far.  over 2000 Hours remaining.

Haha, I think that drive is bad...the test should fail soon...though it shouldn't take that long for a 500GB drive...it's not looking so good to be honest.

Something weird is happening with the drive.  i am sitting next to the drive as i need to use my computer to help a friend and i am noticing that the drive is spinning down after a certain point.  i am starting to wonder if that might be corresponding to something with the slowness?

It probably has a bad sector that the drive can't go across. When it attempts to go beyond that, it hits the drive platter. The drive is probably is damaged on the platter somewhere.

I think it's probably a good idea to retire the drive now...

You have some sectors on the drive that are damaged. With some hard formatting, it may be able to fix it...but I wouldn't be too hopeful.

I would still advise to backup your data and retire the drive...

there is nothing on the drive.  i already got all the data off the drive a while ago.

Ah, well, I guess there's nothing else left to do but retire the drive. Recycle it if you can...or just keep it around as a coaster for odd looks (I use my dying WD 2TB black as a paperweight now).
