I've started to play a lot of BL2 when my internet went kaput for 2 days. then I remembered the game has PhysX, and I have a Nvidia card (1070). so I turn it up to High, which is the maximum.

Pretty good so far, the effects are really, really nice.. but frame rates drop to around 15-20 fps once the effects start going haywire. and GPU usage decreases, so does CPU usage... wut? I checked Nvidia settings, and PhysX is automatically set to my 1070.

And so I reduced to Medium PhysX.. a tad better, but frame rates still drop to roughly 25fps.

I'm assuming i may need a dedicated PhysX card for this?

no you dont need a dedicated physx card (no one does that anymore)

i think BL2 is just really poorly optimized for physx

even on my system it struggles with physx in this game

try this

nvidia control panel > physx settings > set GPU to physx
then try CPU only and see if it helps

that's a shame. have you tried using PhysX in-game?

I have, also using a GTX 1070, and I saw a lot of the same issues you describe. I think there may be ways to limit the number of particles and the lifespan of those particles in the game's config files, but I think the results will basically be like setting PhysX to Low or Medium anyway. And that's what I ended up doing with it.

It's a little amazing to see it run that way when you consider that the game came out when the GTX 680 was a high-end card.

changed it to CPU, no real difference.

i think it's because of some weird interpretation of futureproofing a game by Nvidia. what i mean by that is, take a look at watch dogs 2. it's a Gameworks title, yes, and so it comes with a bunch of Nvidia-exclusive settings that you can't really use at all because performance tanks too much. i imagine these settings are there so it can make the game a little more viable for future GPUs.

Pretty sad that even on Nvidia GPUs, it performs like ass. Nvidia bought out this tech just to spite AMD and now it's going to waste.

Even with a physx card it is just miserable :(  I've tried using one of my 980's as physx and it didn't really improve anything.  Changing to cpu just makes it worse.  Sucks cause it's one of my favorites
