This is going to depend on what size of screen you want to project to, how bright do you want, what resolution are you planning on using and what inputs do you need...  At home, I have a Benq HT3050, which cannot be called cheap, but I get a nice 1080P 90-inch screen from about 8-feet.

 

Projector Central is a good site to read up on some of the projectors as well as use their calculator to get a screen size and lumen calculation.
