Witcher compared to mass effect

So I recently started a topic asking for similar games to mass effect, someone mentioned the witcher 3, I would like to know what multiple people think about how similar the 2 games are containing the criteria I was looking for. If you read the post I made before it has the criteria in looking for.

As one who played Mass Effect 1 (liked it) & ME2 (loved it) & ME3 (liked it - loved Multiplayer with friends though):

I can assure you that Witcher 3 tops them all even when put together. Get it (with Addons) - play it - love it.

Best game in my gaming history (~25+ years). Period.

I was hopsing for a more in depth comparison between the 2 and how it meets, exceeds, or doesn't meet the criteria I posted in the other topic.

I read your other post - bottom line:

It's all there, some aspects may be better in Mass Effect (especially traveling from A to B) due to it's more consoley nature. But Witcher 3 exceeds in all of them in my opinion. Dialogue is made well enough to be a stand out in the genre. Really not much to add. If you haven't played it yet, get it, you won't regret a single minute in that world. (Or hundrets of hours - my first playthrough including addons and as many sidequests as I could do took nearly 250 hours).

 

Of course there is no in depth party-conversation anywhere near ME, since there is no party. It's just Geralt vs. the rest of the world. But you will get attached to some of the characters, you will love some (literally) and you will hate others, you will also change your way how you feel about them multiple times due to plot twists.

 

It's as close to perfection as a 3rd person RPG can be these days. Many tried, lots failed.

Witcher 1 is quite dated. The game is more linear and gameplay is quite awful to be honest. The story is however what makes that game so good. Witcher 2 is still quite linear but not as much, the gameplay is a lot better compared to first one but still nothing amazing. Story is again very superb. Witcher 3 is simply amazing.There is reason why so many reviewers said it was game of the year.

In all Witchers the story is very deep with interesting lore, multiple choices and multiple endings. The choices and consequences you get in Mass Effect are a joke compared to those in Witcher. It is so much more engaging.

As much as I loved Mass Effect (especially 2), a big issue I always had with it was the way in which it telegraphed so clearly what the "good" and "evil" paths were. They're literally color-coded into the conversation system, and kept track of with an arbitrary point system. The Witcher 3 will never give you that clarity. The choices you make have sweeping consequences for the story, but none of the outcomes are clearly "better" or "worse" states for the world to be in, they're all trade-offs. Geralt really isn't trying to be a hero.

 

Aside from the paragon/renegade system, The Witcher 3 has what I'd consider a similar conversation system to Bioware RPGs. Each character has a given set of dialogue at each stage of the story. Once you exhaust the dialogue at a given point in the story, you'll probably need to reach another point before you get anything new. That said, the main characters have a lot of dialogue, and it's interesting enough that one of the rewards of completing a major story step (for me, at least) is checking in with the characters to see what they have to say about things.

 

I don't know if The Witcher series is a direct analogue for Mass Effect if what you actually want is more Mass Effect, but I think at least The Witcher 3 is a must-play for anyone who loves really well-crafted single player RPGs. It's easily one of the best examples of that genre.

I feel the same way, with the paths shown to you I didn't feel like what I chose was something I would actually choose normally and that is one of the few downfalls for mass effect for me. I'm also disappointed on how the conversation isn't very different even if you pick different options which really kinda killed the series for me since that's what I really liked about it was the sense of control over how Shepard acted and where the story or conversation was going. But I continue to play it again and again to see the different outcomes I can get.

 

how do the games compare in how well they immerse you in the story and actually put you in the shoes of the character you play?
