Mint or Ubuntu?

So,

 

I have an old dell Inspiron 1525 with windows vista and I would like to give some more life by installing Linux on it. I have never used Linux before, so which would be better for a Linux noob: Linux mint or Ubuntu?

 

Also, any suggestions on how to go about installing Linux on the PC.

MINT. Mint is a lot lighter weight for an older laptop. To install, simply go to mints sight, download the ISO, use a USB drive, and install it to there. Then, optionally with the files still on the old computer, insert the drive, and reboot. Make sure to click delete or F1 or something to get into the BIOS and choose the USB to boot to. Once your in, mint will give you instructions on how to install

Yep, mints also lighter weight for a slower laptop

I use Ubuntu on an almost daily basis and i would say it is simpler but that is a good or bad thing depending on how well inversed you are with linux (im not so i use ubuntu)

I personally like the modern approach more.

Simpler? Have you even used mint? It's way cleaner than ubuntu and ubuntu comes LOADED with extra stuff that makes it more "plug and play" it is not simpler though...

You can try both of them without installing via LiveCD or however it is called where it runs the lunux directly from the usb stick.

 

So just try them both and see which one you like better and install that one.

Both are really good and very known Linus distrobuations but I do perfer Ubinto as a OS becaise it is mreo user friendly. It really depends on what you are using the OS's on.

Mint seems the easiest to use for me because it requires the least to set up imo

Depends on which particular flavor of Ubuntu you talk about.

On older machines Ubuntu Mate and Lubuntu would be pretty good.

But that in my opinion is pretty much the only Ubuntu flavor distro´s worth looking.

Xubuntu is also pretty sollid, however in that regards Linux Mint XFCE is better for new users.

 

Ubuntu Budgie maybe in the future.

 

Linux mint is a pretty sollid choice.

But its all a matter of personal preference.

There are soo manny decent distributions out there.

And there are soo manny diffrent DE´s out there to pick from.

It really depends on personal preference.

I just finished installing Ubuntu LTS on the Inspiron. Case closed.

technically, it is almost same. They just came with different desktop environments and set of pre-installed apps. You can install cinnamon and themes for it on ubuntu, and it will look like mint.

I've always been a big fan of Gnome 3 (Why my first non-Windows OS was OpenSuse)

I'll try unity for a bit, and then try gnome, and see which one I like more.
