In-built GPU or External dock?

Fatelinha

Hey guys,

I am now saving up for a laptop for college and my goal is to reach 1000 +- 200€
There are a lot of laptops in that range in Portugal but external GPU's are now becoming a thing and I wonder if it would be worth to buy a laptop with a very good processor and use my R9 270 too boost gaming while I'm at home with the dock or just buy a good overall laptop with a good gpu in it. The biggest drawback would be no gaming on the in bright side there are some ultra good CPU Only laptops that are very thin and portable.

What is your opinion on this?

Well, in Portugal you have some pretty nice models in that price range.

Search on PCDiga and Globaldata :)

On one hand, it sounds like a good idea since you can have gaming power when you want it. On the other hand, the technology is still a little immature and a high quality dock with a power supply will still cost you at least $200 USD.

I would rather get a laptop with a GPU built in though. Mostly because I have a tendency to want that power whenever and GPU docks are bulky/heavy.

unpopular opinion time. I have a desktop that has a 1070 and an i5 4460 in it. I use that for most of my gaming. My laptop i has a dual core i7, and a GT 930m. i use this for aming as well and its thin and doesnt look gamery because thats not who its marketed at. i am a college student and i play games like smite, lol, csgo, witcher 3, arkham origins, rocket league, xcom, borderlands 2 and others on my laptop. because it doesnt have super high consumption components it gets great battery life in class for notes, web browsing, netflix, youtube. but when i need to play some light to mid titles with my friends it is more than capable.

Main Rig | Personal Build | Windows 10 | R7 2700x 3.7~4.3ghz | ASUS ROG Strix B450-I | 16gb DDR4 3200mhz | GTX 1080 FE | Coolermaster Elite 130 | Corsair H60 | WD Blue SN500 500GB NVMe SSD + 1tb WD Green HDD + 1tb WD Blue HDD

Laptop | HP m6-w102dx | Windows 10 | i7-5500u 2.4~3.0ghz | 8gb DDR3L | GT 930m 2gb| 120gb Sandisk SSD

you have a r7 s70 so im assuming you have a desktop. bring that to school with you and look for a laptop with a low wattage GPU like a gt 930m/940m/940mx/ and a sufficient dual core cpu. attached is a link to my laptop specs.

Well, if i were you..

I would buy the supa slim Fractal Node 202, build a beefy system on it, buy a slim monitor that it's big enough for your needs and not bigger than the node 202 lateral side and attach the monitor to side of the case, removing the stand of it. I think it would be compact enough to travel with on suitcase and you will have the power of a desktop everywhere :)

btw, Madeira or Açores? :D:D
