The 7700k and the 6700k tend to have faster single core performance when compared to the current X99 lineup. The main reason why alot of people including me have x99 builds is for the fact they are either enthusiast or we do alot of multi-tasking and im talking about Video editing/ encoding while still streaming. More Cores, mean more task you can do at once. But in general unless you are a mass producing videos and etc. The 7700k or the 6700k are still the best price to performance as you are still getting 4c/8t compared jumping to an x99 build usually cost about an extra 200-300$ to have 6c/12t.

Also PCI-E Lanes.
